Do peacocks fly and how do they do it

Peacocks are among the most interesting and recognizable birds in the world.

Most often, they are met by walking on the grass, which, coupled with the relatively large size of the birds, raises quite a logical question about whether they can fly at all.

Do peacocks fly or not?

The answer is positive, despite the long tail and a rather large body weight. A flying peacock with a tail that streams in the wind is a very beautiful sight. These birds fly quite well, on average, the flight speed can reach 17 km / h. The flight begins quickly and at the same time almost silently.

The duration of the flight and its height depend on the need for which the feathery had to get off the ground, and weather conditions.

The reasons for the flight may be as follows:

  1. The search for their land new mature individuals.
  2. Possible danger. This flight is short, about a few meters ahead.
Important! The tails feathers (bright fan-tail) grow in males before the mating season, after its completion they fall away and the male looks more modest.

Why peacocks can't fly for long

The reasons why birds of this species cannot fly for a long time are as follows:

  1. Body structure Body size is so large that the wings are not able to keep the body in the air for a long time.
  2. Weather. A strong wind can interfere with the normal take-off, as the tail will fly apart.
