Rules of autumn and spring planting and care for peonies

Peonies among gardeners are very popular. The plant has beautiful flowers with decorative foliage, the color of which is the most diverse: from pastel to bright shades.

Peony is a durable plant, so it grows beautifully without a transplant for several years in a row.

The name "peony" comes from the name of the ancient Greek physician of the Olympic gods Péan, who was a repugnant of evil.

Pean received a plant from the mother of Apollo Leta, with which he was able to heal the many wounds of Hades, inflicted on him by Hercules. Pean was an excellent doctor, and therefore healers were envied by many, even the god of healing Asclepius (Esculapius). When, out of envy, Aesculapus decided to poison Pean, Hades, in gratitude for his healing, turned him into a flower that looks like a rose.

Peonies in the culture began to grow from ancient times. This flower was known and loved in the ancient world of China and Europe, not only as decorative, but also as healing.

For the first time in Russia, the peony appeared during the reign of Peter 1, and is very popular among gardeners to date.

Peony Landing Location Requirements

Peony - light-loving plant, grows well in sunny and open places; slight shading is allowed during the daytime. In order to avoid the development of plant diseases, it needs air circulation. It is recommended to plant it away from buildings, shrubs and trees.

Requirements for the soil. Peony is perfect loamy cultivated mildly acidic soil. If the soil is clay, it is recommended to add sand to it; on sandy areas - clay; lime is added to the acidic soil.

Spring Landing Peonies

Peonies should be planted in the spring immediately after the ground has thawed out well. Planting should be deep enough (the upper bud of the plant should go 5 cm deep into the soil). The distance between plants should be at least a meter. Planting pions in large quantities involves the preparation of a special trench.

The danger of planting a flower in spring is that its stems grow quite quickly and can be easily broken when planted.

Autumn planting peonies

Unlike spring planting, in autumn the flower is at rest, therefore, such planting is absolutely safe for the plant. The main condition for planting in the ground is the correct depth of its planting.

The optimum depth of the kidney should be 3-5 cm from the soil, but no more than that. When the first frosts appear, a small hill with peat is poured over the plant, which should be removed in early spring. Thus, in winter, the plant will be protected from severe frosts.

For planting peony in the ground they dig a hole with dimensions 80 * 80 * 80 cm. In areas with close groundwater, the depth of the pit is increased to 1 meter with an additional drainage layer of 20 cm. For drainage, you can use fragments of old tile, sand, crushed stone or broken brick . On sandy soils, a layer of clay is laid on the bottom of the pit.

Prepare the pit should be in advance: for planting in the fall pit is prepared in the spring, and vice versa.

A mullein or immature compost 20-25 cm thick is laid on the drainage. The remaining 50-60 cm holes are filled with a nutrient mixture, which consists of loam, matured compost and rotted manure. 200-250 grams of superphosphate, one liter jar of ash, 150-200 grams of potassium sulfate are added to the finished planting pit.

All this is well mixed and watered with a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate at the rate of 10-15 liters per well. The pit is ready. Now you can safely plant a peony in it.

Peony Care

Plant care involves moderate watering (once in 8-12 days at the rate of 12-15 liters of water per plant); fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers; regular removal of weeds and loosening between rows.
