Specialists from the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia carried out a series of inspections of the country's agricultural land from 2015 to the present time, during which no plants with GMOs were identified, according to EastFruit experts.
According to the ministry, during this period, the staff of the biodiversity control service checked samples of crops with the greatest likelihood of genetic modification. In particular, samples of melon, watermelon, potato, wheat, lobio, alfalfa, soybean and rye were examined.
See also:For the study, 177 crop samples were taken from a total agricultural land area of 561.2 ha in different parts of the country. Laboratory studies have shown that these samples did not contain GMO markers and could not be called living genetically modified organisms.
In 2014, the Georgian authorities adopted the law "On living genetically modified organisms" prohibiting the introduction of GMOs into the environment. Products containing GMOs are not allowed to be placed in the country's market network. Issuing a license requires the use of genetically modified organisms in closed systems.
