European onion has increased dramatically in price

Mid-March marked a significant increase in the gap between demand and supply of onions in the European market.

In European markets, onion sales volumes have sharply decreased, now they can less and less satisfy the demand for these products, which is due to its shortage in many countries. Experts call the level of onion supply globally low. This was stated by Patrick Flin, Head of Paris Ail, whose specialization is the supply of onions, garlic and potatoes.

  • According to Flin, the hope of the European market remains imports from the countries of the southern hemisphere, but a complete restoration of the balance of supply and demand is unlikely. The shortage of onions in Europe is unlikely to be covered by imports, even considering the increase in their volume in the coming weeks. According to experts, onion prices in the spring months will remain at a critically high level.

In addition, there remains the option that in the Netherlands, referring to their policy of maximally prolonging the supply of onions, the situation will stabilize a bit. According to Flin, France and Spain also have some onion stocks, which can affect the market favorably. But still the shortage of products remains, which means the inevitable continuation of growth in the price of onions in Europe.
