About 20% of the greenhouse complexes, which are planning to build by the end of 2019, will be set aside for growing eggplants and peppers.
President of the Association "Greenhouses of Russia" Alexey Sitnikov said that was the impetus for this. According to him, last year, about 930 thousand tons of crops were harvested from closed ground. This figure exceeds the parameters of 2017 by more than 20%, which is an incentive for further development of the sphere. Most of the crop was cucumbers and tomatoes. Alexey Sitnikov noted that now the priority of greenhouses is growing peppers and eggplants. Today, 90% of these vegetables on the shelves of Russian supermarkets are imported.

The President noted that the vegetables brought from abroad are not sufficiently tested, which can have unpleasant consequences for the average consumer. Imported eggplants and peppers can contain various chemical components, as the domestic inspection of vegetables involves only the detection of diseases of agricultural products. On a counterweight to imported, domestic greenhouse vegetables are environmentally friendly, since artificial intervention in growing conditions is simply not required. Thus, greenhouse vegetables can be equated to organic.
Meanwhile, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, for the first time, industrial volumes of greenhouse were set aside for eggplants and peppers.
