Preparations for the fight against the Colorado potato beetle

Each gardener in the process of growing various crops has to face all sorts of plant pests. Perhaps the most famous among them is the Colorado potato beetle, which is able to destroy young shoots of potatoes in a matter of days. Given that this particular vegetable is grown here most often, it is not surprising that the poison for the Colorado potato beetle is always in demand on the shelves of domestic stores. But how to navigate in a variety of different drugs? In this we will help you now, because This article provides information on the most popular formulations that have repeatedly proven their effectiveness in practice.

"Aktara"

Insecticidal drug "Aktara" - a relatively new development of the Swiss company "Syngenta", which has already passed mass tests in the fields of the Volga region and the Black Earth region with a total area of tens of thousands of kilometers. "Aktara" provides complete destruction of the Colorado potato beetle, which is explained by contact-intestinal and translaminar (possibility of spreading along the stems and leaves) by the action of the composition. This fact allows you to properly protect all parts of the plant, while maintaining this effect at high temperature and low humidity. In addition, after the active substance gets under the wax sheath of the leaf plate, Aktar will no longer be afraid of rain. The duration of protection ranges from 14 to 28 days.

Important! The drug is incompatible with formulations that are alkaline.
The processing is simple: you either spray each bush from the sprayer (of course, after pouring the contents of the packets into a two-liter container and filling it with one liter of clean water), or you distribute the drug under the roots of the plant along with the irrigation. In the latter case, the insecticide will last longer (up to two months), but the negative impact on the roots will be much more significant.

Did you know? Aktara performs well both with adult individuals and with the larvae of the Colorado potato beetle, and once in the body of an insect, it deprives it of food in 15-60 minutes.
Treatment bushes should be carried out in gloves, special glasses and protective clothing that will help protect the skin and mucous membranes from the effects of poison used. It is noteworthy that Aktara can also harm bees, therefore, it is possible to let them out of the hive only 4-5 days after the garden.

"Bankol"

Poisons from the Colorado potato beetle are represented by different classes of drugs, but almost all of them are highly toxic. "Bankol" became one of the first compositions that were classified as nereistoxins to the new chemical class.

It is synthesized from natural raw materials, which, in turn, was obtained from sea ringed worms.

Important! In the working solution the drug "Bankol" is compatible with stimulants, and it can also be combined with some fungicides.
On the central nervous system of pests, this poison acts almost instantly: insects cease to drink, move, and eventually die (within 1-2 days). Processing potatoes "Bankol" has already proved its high efficiency, which reaches 85-100%. The method of application is the following: 5-7 g of the drug must be dissolved in a small amount of water, and then dilute the resulting solution in another 10 liters of liquid. Working consumption of 5-10 liters per 1 hundred.

On humans, warm-blooded animals, fish and bees, this tool does not have a serious toxic effect, and it does not lose its properties at low humidity and high temperature, which is an undeniable advantage. Recently, however, more and more information appears that with prolonged use of the composition of its effectiveness is reduced, and you have to look again than to poison the Colorado potato beetle.

"Bushido"

"Bushido" - another insecticidal new generation that helps get rid of the Colorado potato beetle on potatoes. Like the previous version, it belongs to the group of neonicotinoids and is used to destroy the most resistant pests that conventional preparations cannot cope with.

It is to such insects, in addition to thrips, scoop, aphids, tsikadki or moths, applies and the Colorado potato beetle.

The drug is available in the form of granules, packed in small bags, which dissolve in water before direct use. Each sachet contains 0.2 or 0.5 g of the drug, the chemical composition of which is represented mainly by clothianidine 500 g / kg. The contents of one sachet are dissolved in 5 liters of cool water and stirred until completely dissolved. The resulting amount of funds will be sufficient for spraying the bushes of potatoes in an area of 100 m². Spraying of plants or the treatment of planting tubers can be carried out at any stage of the growing season.

Important! The spraying procedure is best done before 10 am or after 6 pm, provided that there is no wind and no rain.
The action of the drug "Bushido" is to inhibit the opening of sodium channels, which blocks the nerve impulse. As a result, the pest paralyzes and then dies. This composition has systemic, intestinal and contact properties, and it penetrates only into the stems and leaves, without affecting the tubers. The effect of the drug begins instantly.

"Bushido" is well combined with other drugs, perfectly interacting with almost all the insecticides that are present in stores now. However, it should be noted and toxicity of the composition for bees, due to which the drug was classified as a first class of hazard. At the same time, for people and animals "Bushido" is practically non-toxic and belongs to the 3rd class of danger.

"Gulliver"

"Gulliver" refers to a combination of broad-spectrum insecticidal drugs and, moreover, acts as an excellent growth promoter. The product comes in the form of a concentrate (contained in ampoules with a capacity of 3 ml), soluble in water. The chemical composition of this poison is represented by the following active ingredients:

  • alpha-cypermethrin (15 g / l);
  • lambda cyhalothrin (80 g / l);
  • thiamethoxam (250 g / l).
All of them affect the nervous system of pests in different ways, but in any case they put it out of action. In Colorado beetles, like in other insects, convulsions, paralysis begin, and eventually death occurs.

If you are tired of fighting pests and simply don’t know how to destroy the annoying Colorado potato beetle, "Gulliver" will be an excellent solution to the problem, as it can work effectively for up to 20 days (starting from the moment of processing). However, it does not combine with alkaline insecticides, and it cannot be used in very hot weather, with wind or rain (even if it is small).

As with other drugs, spraying potatoes is best done in the evening, during the growing season. As for the consumption of funds, then dilute the contents of one ampoule (3 ml) into 10 liters of cool clear water for 200 m², and then spray the plants. It should also be noted not only the usefulness for crops, but also the safety of the drug for living organisms, including people, thanks to which the drug was classified as Class 3.

"Bison"

Remedy for pests "Zubr" is a systemic insecticide of acute contact-intestinal action, which rather effectively helps to cope with the Colorado potato beetle, fleshed up potatoes. Pests do not have immunity to the action of this compound, therefore both adults and their larvae are subject to destruction. Immediately after spraying, it quickly penetrates the leaves of the plant and spreads just as quickly through it, which ensures long-term protection not only of the treated, but also of the young leaves and stems. Eating the treated parts of the plant, the pest dies within a few hours after contact with them. Just a few days is enough for you to completely get rid of annoying insects.

A significant advantage of the drug "Bison", which distinguishes it from other similar formulations, is high efficiency even in hot weather or with little precipitation. In addition, it is used in low consumption rates: only 1 ml of the preparation will be enough to process two hundred hectares of vegetable garden. The contents of the ampoule with a capacity of 5 ml is enough to prepare 50 liters of working solution. For convenience, you can first prepare a concentrate (5 ml of the drug per 1 l of water), and then dilute 200 ml of the concentrate in 10 l of water. Only one such treatment will protect your potatoes for a whole month.

Both concentrate and working solution should be used on the day of preparation, performing processing in dry, calm weather, early in the morning or in the evening, evenly wetting the leaves.

Did you know? In order not only to get rid of the Colorado potato beetle, but also to protect potato plantations from blight, it is necessary to use a mixture of preparations "Bison" and "Ridomil Gold".
The drug is dangerous only for bees, so during flowering plants processing is prohibited. It is also dangerous for fish, and therefore, it is necessary by all means to prevent the ingress of the drug in open water.

"Intavir"

The answer to the question of how to deal with the Colorado potato beetle was also proposed by the developers of the drug Intavir, which belongs to the class of synthetic pyrethroids, which have a negative effect on groups of coleoptera, lepidoptera, and even-winged insects. The drug comes in the form of tablets or powder, which are easily soluble in water. The main active ingredient of the composition is cypermethrin at a concentration of 35 g / l. It was he greatly slows the opening of sodium channels, thereby causing paralysis and death of pests. Penetrates into the body of insects by contact and intestinal methods. The action of the drug begins with the application to the plant and lasts up to two weeks.

Intavir is incompatible with alkaline insecticides, but, like them, is applied to plants with reduced solar activity and in the absence of any precipitation.

For one hundred green areas you will need 1 tablet of the drug, previously diluted in 1 bucket of water. For a maximum of a season, you will be able to carry out only two treatments: in the period of development of the second-generation larvae and when absolutely necessary, when the potato bushes will again be densely covered with insects.

Intavir belongs to the second and third class of danger, causing harm to bees and all aquatic inhabitants, while the negative impact on people and animals is quite moderate.

"Golden Spark"

The Golden Spark is an innovative tool created using the well-known Imidacloprid (in this case at a concentration of 200 g / l). Comes in the form of a wettable powder (40 g per pack); 1 or 5 ml ampoules or 10 ml vials. A drug characterized by high efficiency in conditions of extreme heat, which is its undeniable advantage.

The spark from the Colorado potato beetle is a substance with a neurotoxic effect that causes convulsions and paralysis of limbs in pests. The end result is death. The action of the composition begins in 2-3 days and lasts for three weeks. Unlike some of the other drugs described above, Iskra combines well with fungicides. The product is applied to the ground parts of potatoes with a spray bottle, into which the solution prepared with 1 ml or 40 g of the preparation diluted in 5 liters of cool water is pre-poured (this amount will be enough to treat 100 m² of potato plantations).

The Golden Spark has a highly pronounced toxic effect on bees, representing for them the first class of danger. but for people and animals the negative effect of the chemical is not as dangerous therefore, in this area he was assigned to grade 3.

"Calypso"

Calypso is not as famous as the previous versions of the neonicotinoid class, but also It has a great effect on the Colorado potato beetle and a number of gnawing and sucking harmful insects, helping to get rid of them once and for all. The product is supplied as a suspension concentrate, placed in plastic bottles of 10 ml each (to treat 100 m² of plantings, dilute 1 ml of the preparation in 5 liters of cool water). The main active ingredient is thiacloprid at a dosage of 480 g / l.

The poison of the drug "Calypso", entering the body of the pest (contact, intestinal or systemic), interferes with the transmission of impulses in the nervous system, due to the effects on nicotin-choline receptors. This causes severe overexcitement, manifested by convulsions, followed by paralysis and, ultimately, the death of an insect.

The action of the drug begins within 3-4 hours after the treatment of plants and lasts for 30 days. It combines well with growth regulators, fungicides and most insecticides. However, it cannot be mixed with compounds that contain copper and have an alkaline reaction.

You can sprinkle Calypso potatoes at any stage of its growing season, but only in calm, calm weather and with reduced sun activity. Also, the treatment is not carried out during rain and fog. The last spraying should be done 25 days before the intended harvest so that there are no chemicals left in the potato.

The drug "Calypso" is of low toxicity to bees and belongs to the third class of danger, but it is rather harmful for people and animals, although it is considered moderately dangerous (because of this it is ranked as the second class).

"Malathion"

Colorado beetles can be called a real disaster for potatoes, so the question of how to deal with them is very relevant for most gardeners. Among the many modern drugs to combat this pest need to select "Karbofos", as this organophosphate agent of a broad spectrum of action has already been tested by time. Form of the composition - 45% aqueous emulsion, placed in a vial with a capacity of 5 ml. The main active ingredient of the drug is malathion.

To prepare the working fluid, 5 ml of the product should be diluted in 5 liters of cool or slightly warm water and stirred well.

Important! The prepared remedy should be used immediately, without leaving to infuse.

Processing of potato bushes "Karbofos" is performed in cloudy and calm weather, but only in the absence of precipitation. All plants should be sprayed uniformly, wetting abundantly, but not allowing the drug to drain to the soil. Potatoes can be processed with the preparation several times per season, but The last treatment should not be done later than 20 days before the intended harvest.

In the process of action on the pest "Karbofos" changes the normal structure of enzymes that are directly involved in the activity of the insect's nervous system. Once in the body of the Colorado potato beetle, the substance is transformed and becomes even more poisonous.

Among the minuses of using this particular drug, it is probably worth highlighting relatively short duration - only 10 days, although, as positive features, one cannot but note good compatibility with other insecticides and fungicides.

For mammals and humans, "karbofos" does not pose a serious danger, due to which it belongs to the 3rd class, but for bees it is very toxic and fell into the second class of dangerous drugs.

"Karate"

"Karate" is a concentrated drug, which belongs to the class of synthetic pyrethroids broad-spectrum and serves to get rid of a whole group of harmful insects, including Colorado beetles. Available in 2 ml ampoules. The main active ingredient of the composition is lambda-cyhalothrin in a consistency of 50 g / l.

The drug "Karate" has a contact and intestinal effects and disables the nervous system of pests by affecting the sodium and potassium channels, as well as disrupting calcium metabolism. The duration of the funds is 40 days from the date of use.

To prepare the working solution, you need to mix 2 ml of the preparation in a bucket of water, which will be enough for a 100 m² garden area. You can also dilute "Karate" first in a smaller amount of liquid, mix well and only then bring to the desired volume. Manufacturers recommend two treatments per season: during the growing season of potatoes and 20 days after that.

Spraying should be done only with a freshly prepared solution and in calm weather, ensuring uniform wetting of the ground parts of the potato bushes.

The drug "Karate" is well compatible with almost all insecticides and fungicides, which significantly expands the possibilities of caring for plants.

In terms of toxicity, means belongs to the 3rd class of danger, as it represents a moderate threat to animals, birds, fish, bees, and, of course, humans. However, it is better to avoid the slightest possibility of ingestion of funds into water bodies and food, as well as to protect livestock from contact with the treated areas of the territory.

"Killer"

"Killer" - this is another combined effective drug that helps to cope with the invasion of a whole list of various pests. It is presented in the form of a concentrate of substances that are dissolved in water before use. Delivered to stores in 1.3 ml glass ampoules.

Important! “Killer” is resistant to washing off by rain, therefore one spraying is enough for the whole season.
Cypermethrin (50 g / l) and chlorpyrifos (500 g / l) act as active ingredients of the drug. They affect the pest's nervous system at all stages of its development. Chlorpyrifos interferes with the normal production of protein enzymes that are directly involved in the transmission of nerve impulses. At the same time, cypermethrin contributes to the closure of sodium channels, which causes a violation of synaptic functions.

The killer can enter the pest's organism in several ways (contact, intestinal or respiratory) and completely destroys the adult individuals and their larvae in just a few days, continuing their protective effect for 16-21 days. All you need is to spray potato bushes with the prepared solution, performing the procedure in the evening and in calm weather. Beforehand, the contents of one ampoule must be mixed with 8 liters of water and mixed well. The resulting liquid will be enough to treat 100 m² of potato plantations. If protection of planting tubers is required, then for 30 kg you will need 10 ml of the drug dissolved in 600-700 ml of water. Potato processing is carried out only once: during the vegetative maturation of the crop, but no later than one month before harvest.

The composition indicated is not suitable for use with copper preparations and alkaline insecticides.

"Killer" is a moderately toxic agent and belongs to the third class of hazardous substances (for all warm-blooded animals, in particular, for humans).

"Commander"

The drug "Commodore" for processing potatoes is used at least than other popular compositions today. It is equally useful when spraying potatoes, and when applied to the soil, and thanks to the pronounced systemic activity, "Commander" freely penetrates the plant tissue and moves along them along with nutrients. This tool is a contact-systemic insecticide against a wide range of insects, equally effectively affecting both adults and their larvae. For "Commander" is characterized by a pronounced systemic effect, through which the drug penetrates the leaves, stem and roots of the plant. The active influence of the composition on the nervous system of pests allows suppressing the transmission of impulse signals, as a result of which the insects lose their ability to move, stop feeding and die during the day. In addition, the drug has a pronounced contact-intestinal activity.

The method of application is almost the same as when using other similar compounds: the right amount of the drug (in this case 2 ml) is diluted in the required amount of water (10 l) and applied with a spray bottle to the bushes. The period of active action "Commander" lasts from two to four weeks, which means that For high-quality protection of potatoes, 1-2 treatments per season will be sufficient.

The positive moment of the use of this particular agent is its specific mechanism of action, which distinguishes the composition from the group of drugs perretroids and from organophosphorus compounds, thereby reducing the likelihood of resistance. Besides, It can be used in conditions of high temperatures and it has a sufficiently high resistance to washing off by rain, and is not afraid of direct sunlight. "Commander" is well combined with the majority of insecticides, fungicides and growth regulators, and as an exception act only drugs with an alkaline reaction.

The drug belongs to the third class of hazardous substances (moderately hazardous substance): it poses a threat to bees and can have a slightly negative effect on the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out processing only in goggles, gloves and changeable clothes, and after work you should thoroughly wash hands and face.

"Colorado"

The drug "Colorado" is a powerful insect-fungo-acaricidal composition, which has the possibility of triple action: contact, intestinal and systemic, which has a positive effect on the process of pest control. On sale you can find it in the form of ampoules, each of which contains 2 ml of funds.

The main active ingredient of the drug "Colorado" was the neonicotinoid Imidacloprid, which, according to the instructions for use, contains 200 g per 1 liter of concentrate. Influencing the central nervous system of pests, imidacloprid causes paralysis and convulsions. Within a few hours the insects become lethargic, passive and stop feeding. The maximum impact, that is, the death of the Colorado potato beetles, occurs within 3-5 days after spraying. High residual activity of the substance protects the potato for 14-28 days after processing.

"Colorado" is used to spray the plants with each appearance of pests (or their larvae) with a break of 7 days. To prepare the working fluid 130-160 g of the drug must be diluted in 10 liters of water.

When using "Colorado" it is necessary to remember that its active ingredient imidacloprid is a dangerous reagent for humans and domestic animals. Therefore, direct contact with it can lead to severe poisoning, which as a result causes damage to the liver and central nervous system.

"Prestige"

When choosing what to sprinkle potatoes before planting, we recommend to pay attention to the drug "Prestige" - the leader in popularity among the means with a similar effect. It is supplied in a 30 ml pack and in a 150 ml bottle. For processing potato tubers, it is sufficient to dilute 30 ml (that is, the entire package) of the drug in 0.3-0.6 l of water, mix (process tubers are poured onto an old sheet or tarpaulin, and then mixed with the composition). After completing the treatment, it is important to quickly plant the plants so that they do not lie around for a long time.

This simple event will help you. prevent the attacks of the Colorado potato beetle and other pests, as well as save you from many potato diseases. Active ingredients that are part of the drug, enter the tuber, and as soon as it begins to germinate, go to all parts of the plant. Of course, this fact can scare away some gardeners, but the drug moves only upwards, which means that young tubers forming at the ends of stolons can be safely eaten (albeit after a certain quarantine period).

Important! It is possible to treat potato tubers with the “Prestige” preparation only if you plan to harvest not earlier than August (studies conducted showed that the active substance is neutralized only 60 days after application).
In addition to these advantages in protecting your plants from pests, using the Prestige from the Colorado potato beetle, You will also stimulate the growth of potatoes before the plants start flowering. Of course, over time, the beetles will begin to attack the potatoes again, but the critical moment for the formation of the crop will have passed, and the insects will be much smaller at this time.

Of course, the treated tubers can not be taken barehanded, so planting such bushes using rubber gloves will take longer.

Proper treatment with Prestige will increase the resistance of potatoes to changes in the environment, as well as increase their germination and growth.

"Regent"

Some gardeners call "Regent" is one of the most effective modern tools in the fight against the Colorado potato beetle on potatoes. Insect is not sufficiently resistant to the specified drug, which has in its composition the usual pesticides (peritroids and FOS). At the same time, Regent itself, as well as some of the previously described preparations, is able to move freely around the plant, protecting all its parts, and even those that the substance did not get on while spraying. The Regent has a detrimental effect on both adults and the larvae of the Colorado potato beetle when it enters their bodies through direct contact or in the intestinal way, by eating the processed potato leaves.

The drug is characterized by a long period of validity (about a month), which means that One treatment will be able to protect your plants throughout the growing season. It should also be noted that "Regent" has a high starting activity, and after a few hours the insects stop feeding and soon die. It will take less than a week to complete the destruction of the pest.

Among the positive characteristics of the Regent, it is necessary to single out its resistance to the effects of high temperatures, as well as to rain (the means becomes indelible within 4-6 hours after treatment). However, do not forget that this drug cannot be used on the same site for several years in a row, since the Colorado potato beetle can quickly adapt to an insecticide.

Whatever it was, but all the described compositions are chemical means of protection, and failure to follow safety precautions when using them is fraught with the ingress of toxic substances into the human body, which often causes dizziness, nausea or irritation on the skin. Besides, too frequent use of insecticides (even if different) will negatively affect the quality of the cultivated potatoes, so think: maybe it makes sense to try for a start the national methods of pest control?
