Planting tomatoes for seedlings in the Leningrad region, Siberia and other parts of Russia: when is the time coming?

Getting a good harvest of tomatoes does not always depend on the proper cultivation. Sometimes vegetable culture care is provided with full-fledged, but tomatoes still do not grow very actively. This can happen due to the fact that seedlings were originally grown incorrectly. And in order to grow seedlings strong and healthy, you need to know the appropriate time for sowing seeds.

Since our country stretches for many kilometers, and the climate in different regions can differ dramatically, so the time of sowing seeds can vary. The article tells about the specific dates of planting tomatoes in seedlings.

Why do sowing dates differ in different regions?

Everything depends on the climate. Agronomists take into account many factors:

  • the number of sunny and warm days;
  • amount of precipitation;
  • the beginning of the first autumn frosts;
  • the beginning of the thaw.

Also, the sowing date depends on the variety of tomatoes. However, not all varieties of tomatoes are suitable for your area.

What can lead the wrong planting time of tomatoes?

Experienced vegetable growers have long learned how to correctly calculate the dates of sowing seeds for seedlings. If the seeds are planted too early for a certain region, then the seedlings may not receive all the necessary elements for full development. And when the seedlings still fully grow, the climatic conditions outside the window will not allow to plant sprouts in open ground. Because of what the seedlings grow and weaken. What will complicate its transportation and landing process. These seedlings can not transfer stress during movement into open ground and even die.

However, if you plant the seed too late, you will have to wait a long time for the seedlings to climb, which means that it will later be transferred to the garden plot. In this case, there is a risk that the tomatoes will not have time to fully grow and give a good harvest before the autumn frosts.

When do you need to sow tomatoes for greenhouses and in open ground?

In Siberia

Siberian weather is very unpredictable, so sometimes the seedlings are already fully ripe, and the window is still freezing. In this case, it is worth stopping the growth of seedlings. This can be done by reducing the air temperature in the room and reducing the soil moisture. If these methods did not help, you can use the growth athlete "Athlete" - it does not awaken the growth of the ground part of the seedlings, but slows it down.

Sowing time depends on the variety of tomatoes.

  • Early varieties need to be planted in the first 10 days of spring.
  • Types of medium ripening sow in the second half of March.
  • Tomatoes with a long ripening period are prepared for seedlings in the last two weeks of winter.
  • Tall crops are sown from the second decade of February to the first days of March.
  • Cherry tomatoes are suitable for later planting - even throughout April.

In Omsk

It all depends on where the seedlings will be transferred: in open ground or greenhouse.

If the agronomist plans to move the seedlings to the greenhouse, then it is possible to sow the seeds even in early February. However, in this case, the prerequisite is additional lighting and heating, since in winter the light days are too short.

When planting seedlings immediately in open ground, seeds are sown no earlier than the end of March.

In the Arkhangelsk region

To be planted in a greenhouse, tomatoes should be sown in early spring. It will happen in early March, middle or end, depending on the variety of tomatoes. Carry tomatoes in the greenhouse need, starting from the second half of April. But in the open ground the seedlings are located somewhere from the middle of June, when the risk of frost has completely passed.

In the Urals

If the agronomist needs to transfer the seedlings to the greenhouse as early as April, the seeds should be sown in the first half of February.

For open ground, the seed material sits in different periods:

  • early and medium ripening tomatoes are sown from mid-March;
  • For early planting, ultra-early superdeterminate varieties are excellent, whose bushes do not grow high;
  • Tomato varieties with large fruits are usually late-ripening, so it is better to sow from seedlings as early as possible in mid-February.

In Udmurtia

In this region it is very difficult to achieve a good harvest in the open field.therefore it is better not to transfer seedlings to the garden plot at all. Experienced agronomists recommend keeping tomatoes in the greenhouse for the entire period of growth and development.

The optimal landing time for this area is the first decade of April.

In the Far East and Primorsky Krai

From late January to mid-February, seedlings should be planted for tomato seedlings, which are distinguished by late ripening.

If the agronomist chooses mid-season or early vegetable crops, the time for planting is slightly shifted - until the second decade of March. In the open ground tomatoes can be planted, starting from 10 June. Previously, this should not be done, because before this period there is a chance to destroy the seedlings at low temperatures.

In the south of Russia

Reference! In such regions, tomatoes can be sown immediately in open ground. And you can follow the usual method of growing.

In the southern parts of our country, the heat comes very early, and the light day lasts a long time even in early spring. therefore late-ripened tomato seeds can be sown from late January to mid-February. And it is recommended to sow early and middle varieties from the last numbers of winter to mid-March. Of course, planting seedlings in greenhouses is not necessary.

In the northwestern regions

Ultra early varieties are not recommended for sowing before mid-April. And later tomatoes can be planted on seedlings, starting from the second decade of March. In these areas, you can skip the process of moving the seedlings in the greenhouse, and immediately take them into the open ground with such a late planting on seedlings.

In the Leningrad region

If there is little natural light in the room and it is not possible to provide additional artificial light, then tomato seeds are sown from the second half of February. In the case of good and long-term coverage for seedlings, the period of its planting can be slightly shifted - approximately until the first decade of March. After 50 days after sowing, seedlings can be transferred to the greenhouse. And the time of landing in open ground depends on weather conditions.

In the middle lane

Of course, the time of sowing the seeds depends on their pre-treatment. For example, seeds soaked in water or a growth stimulator can be sown for 4-5 days, unlike dry seeds. If the plans of the grower include placing grown seedlings in the greenhouse, then the seeds are sown in the period from 1 to 10 March. In the case of planting tomatoes immediately for open ground, planting time is approaching the first decade of April.

In Moscow and Moscow region

In this region, agronomists advise not to hurry with the planting of tomatoes. For seedlings that go to the greenhouse, the optimal dates for Moscow and the Moscow region are the first two weeks of March. If the vegetable grower intends to plant the grown seedlings immediately in open ground, then it is better to sow the seeds, starting from the second half of March and ending with the first days of April.

Attention! For regions with adverse climatic conditions, we recommend giving preference to varieties with early and medium ripening.

Tomatoes are most commonly grown with seedlings.. However, even this method does not give an absolute guarantee of a good harvest. For each region of our country, it is important to choose the right varieties, the characteristics of which are best suited for a particular area.

But the choice of seeds is not limited. It will be necessary also to decide on the time of sowing. In some regions you should not hurry, while in others you will need to hurry in order to have time to grow tomatoes before the end of summer. Therefore, when planting, make a start only from the climatic features of your paradise and the characteristics of the crop being planted.
